My name is Abraham Hamilton, III and this is The Hamilton Minute.
Thursday, June 28, 1787, after four to five unsuccessful weeks during the Constitutional Convention, 81 year-old Benjamin Franklin rose to propose a motion
Mr. President,… how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of our contest with G[reat] Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine Protection… And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance.
Daily prayer was his motion. It produced our Constitution.
