Alex McFarland The Bible.
Bert Harper It's the word of God. Sharper than any two edged sword. This sacred book is living and active and contains all that's needed for life and godliness. Stay with American Family Radio for the next hour as we study God's word and take your Bible questions. Welcome to Exploring the Word. Growing up as a kid I watched an hour long drama, Perry Mason. Now my dad loved that and I watched it with him. A trial where they would have the trial, the evidence would be presented and they would talk about it and then there would be a closing statement and then there would be the verdict and then the sentence. Well, when you read chapter four of Hosea and we're going to get there, it's like a trial because it says I have a charge against you. But before we get to chapter four, we want to look at five verses in chapter three that I do believe are some of the most amazing stories concerning love and concerning someone that God would use to demonstrate the love of God, and that is Hosea. This is Bert harper along with Dr. Alex McFarland and it's our joy each day to come to you at this time Monday through Friday, just studying the Word of God. And we're in the Book of Hosea. it's one of the minor, let me put it this way. It's a major, minor prophet. That might be the best way to put it. And we've been looking at that and we want to continue today. Again, Alex, when I see Hosea and I see his calling, and him demonstrating that with his life, it really speaks to my heart every time I think about him.
Alex McFarland Amen. Amen. you know Bert, I remember several years ago there was a movie based on the Book of Hosea, and Gomer and I don't exactly remember the name of it, but it was kind of during, the California gold rush, a farmer fell for a woman that had kind of a bad past and she just couldn't hardly believe that he would really love her. And it took several, scenarios, but he did. And I remember we were seeing this movie and it became clear that it was based on the Book of Hosea. But God has unconditional love. Just as God was very patient with the nation of Israel in their backslidings. God is patient with us. And do you know, we often hear the word grace, but the grace of God, and I'm sure everybody's heard it preached, God's unmerited favor, maybe G, R A C E. God's Riches at Christ's expense is really. Well, it is divine, supernatural, sacred. It's more than our, fallen human minds can really completely comprehend. The unconditional love of God that is as close by as a prayer. And, I think we need to say as much about it as we can, don't you?
Bert Harper Amen. Grace, grace. Amazing grace. It really is. And he loves you. No matter who you are listening today, no matter if you're driving a truck, sitting behind a desk, whatever you might be doing, I can say God loves you and he has a wonderful plan for you. And that is to know Jesus Christ as savior and Lord and enter into a great adventure. It may not be easy, but I guarantee you it will be exciting if you follow him. Well, Hosea, chapter three. I'm just going to read these five verses, Alex, and I'll turn it over to you. And we can look at this quickly. And there's several comments that need to be made. But let me read chapter three, verse one of the book of Hosea. It says, then the Lord said to me, go again. Love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery. Just like the love of the Lord for the children of Israel who look to other gods and love the raising cakes of the pagans.
Caroline The.
Bert Harper So I bought her for myself for 15 shekels of silver, 1 1/2 homer of barley. And I said to her, you shall stay with me many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man. Thus I also will be toward you. For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without epod or at Teraphim. Afterward, the children of Israel shall return, seek the Lord their God and David their king, and fear the Lord in his goodness in the latter days. Again, this is chapter three, if you remember what it is. Hosea married this woman called Gomer. She became and. Or, was an adulterer, harlot. She went out to other men, left him completely. But now he goes and he buys her back. He redeems her. What a story of redemption, Alex.
Alex McFarland Amen. Amen. You know, in that verse one of chapter three, Chapter three is very brief, but it talks about that the children of Israel loved the raisin cakes of the pagans. You know, later on in chapter seven, there's going to be a, reference to Ephraim is a cake not turned. Okay, the northern kingdom of Israel, twice. There's a reference to cakes. Now, here's the thing. If you've ever cooked pancake. And we'll get to this again in Hosea 7. But I remember I was very young in the faith, and that just arrested me. I know what an unturned pancake is. It's only done on one side. It's half baked. And so there's that indictment that's going to come. But here in Hosea 3:1, they loved the cakes of the pagans. let me say that, nothing of the world should lure us away from the eternal God. But like verse five concludes, they shall fear the Lord and his goodness. In the latter days. God always acts redemptively to bring his people back to Him. Well, chapter four is.
Bert Harper Okay, Let me two or three comments, if you don't mind, before we go to chapter four. Okay. Two key words in verse one. Just like, yeah, just like. In other words, what Hosea was experiencing with his wife, God was experiencing with Israel. That is the whole idea. Just like. And he buys her back for 15 shekels of silver, which is half the price of a slave. This is probably picturing a slave market where they would be, she was all used up. Didn't. Men didn't want her any longer. she had been playing the harlot for so many years. But, Gomer, was still loved by Hosea. He redeems her, brings her back and sets her apart for a while. And saying, listen, you're not going to be with a man. I'm not going to be with you, but this is what we're doing. And it just like. And then he says in verse four, the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince. In other words, there's going to be a time in this period of waiting. But then you come again. As you said in verse five, it says that afterward, the children of Israel shall return. Hallelujah. Now, the word return is used 22 times in the book of Hosea. That is what it's about, returning. Oh, turn to me, come to me, and there may be someone who's listening right now. There's a time when you were on fire for God. You really loved him. You served Him. But you've let your love. You've left your first love. Here it is. Return to him. Return. do like David, restore the joy of my salvation, of your salvation, O God, in my life. So, Alex, chapter three, it may be short, but it is filled with promise.
Alex McFarland Amen. filled with promise and filled with repeated words.
Bert Harper I look for a man. I find a man.
Caroline Amen.
Alex McFarland Chapter four. Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land. There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. And okay, so in Hosea, chapter four, there's going to be really the charges. You know, if someone is taken, to court very, often a judge or maybe the DA will read the charges. Well, that's happening here, isn't it, Bert? Verse, one, no truth or mercy or knowledge of God. Those three things are really the, not only personally vital, but they're the pillars of a civil, ah, society. Truth, mercy, and really the knowledge of God. I, Hope that's not to be said of the USA at some
Bert Harper point, you know, it is in the land. And that was true then. Could it be now? There is evidence. But notice those three things. Truth. Listen, this is it. If it's not true, it's not your truth or my truth. It is truth. Notice what it says. Truth. Not. Not what Hosea thought, not. Not what Gomer thought or whoever it was. No mercy or mercy. notice which one comes first, truth or mercy? Truth. Alex, I don't know how to say it and I'll throw it back to you. I know you were going on to chapter two, but, you know, if there's no truth, mercy and knowledge is not going to withstand the weight. You catch what I'm saying? It begins with truth. That Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He is the truth and in him we can know him. So I thought it was important that it did say truth first.
Alex McFarland Well, you know, in Jon 1:17 it says of Jesus that he, comes with grace and truth. I've often said this, that legalism is truth, at the expense of love. But liberalism is love at the expense of truth. You know, I've been around people that were very hard, legalistic, no grace, no mercy whatsoever. And then I've been around people that were very liberal, that were, you know, it was love. Love, love. No standards. It's both. And we see this not only in Jon 1:17, but in Hosea 4:1, there must be truth. Now, by the way, truth, that which corresponds to reality.
Bert Harper Amen.
Alex McFarland You know, let me say we're living in a time when, you know, if you speak truth, they might call it hate speech or something like that. Now in, the language, the Greek is alethea, in the Hebrew it's emeth, E M E T H, but it's that which corresponds to reality. It's what's right, it's what's real, it's what's true.
Bert Harper And sure, regardless of how you feel, Alex.
Alex McFarland Exactly.
Bert Harper Oh, wow.
Alex McFarland And by the way, truth is not about emotions. Here's the deal. Follow that which is true, and your emotions will eventually follow. People want to be happy or they want to feel peace. And of course, that's completely understandable. follow Jesus. Do what is right and moral and true, and your emotions will catch up to it.
Bert Harper Amen. Preach it, brother. Knowledge of God. Now, this knowledge of God is not just knowing about him, it's knowing him.
Alex McFarland Okay?
Bert Harper And it's in the land. And then it goes on. I, think what that is, that's the general charge. You catch what I'm saying? That is the overall charge. And then the rest of it.
Alex McFarland But it's about to get specific.
Bert Harper It is. That's exactly how you see. I think that's the truth. So here it is, verse 2 and 3. By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint. Real important. Without bloodshed after bloodshed, with bloodshed after bloodshed. Therefore the land will mourn, and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beast of the field, the birds of the air, even the fish of the sea will be taken away. All of that land. Notice. Go back, if you would, in, verse one. No knowledge of God in the land. So guess who suffers everything in the land? People. And the animal life as well, Alex.
Alex McFarland Amen. You know, I was thinking about this. This sounds like, a Saturday night in the average American city. Swearing, lying, killing, stealing, committing adultery. Bloodshed upon bloodshed. God help us. Send a revival.
Bert Harper Send a revival. We're going to be back and we're going to continue in chapter four. Again. It's like being in a courtroom. We're going to hear the rest of the charges and then we're going to hear some more. What God has to say about when we live that way. We'll be right back. Hello, I'm, Bert Harper. Alex McFarland Praise him for friends and family, for the very air we breathe, for having everything we need. Won't somebody come praise the Lord with me? M. Yeah, can I get a hallelujah? Won't somebody come praise the Lord with us? yes, we will praise the Lord. God is so good. This is Alex along with Bert, and we are in the Old Testament, Book of Hosea, chapter four. later on in the show, we will take Bible questions. So we'd love to hear from you if you want to get in the queue. Got the computer right here with all the phone lines. And so, let's continue in Hosea 4, and then we will get to some Bible questions. Bert, before the break, we were talking about the indictments, and God gets pretty specific about Israel here, their violence and immorality. And it says that, therefore the land will mourn. even the land around us suffers when sin takes over. everyone who dwells there wastes away. The beasts of the field, the birds, even the fish of the sea will be taken away. Verse 4. Now, let no man contend or rebuke one another, for your people are like those who contend with the priests. Therefore you shall stumble in the day. See, in the day, you should be able to see where you're going. But things, are so bad, people are going to stumble and fall even in broad daylight. The prophet also shall stumble with you in the night, and I will destroy your mother. And then, of course, very famously, Hosea, four, six. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Now, Bert, let's go back to verse four for a second. Let let no man contend or rebuke one another. All right, what does that mean? It's like people say, look, this is all your fault. No, we don't need to point fingers at each other. We need to humble our own selves. Right, Bert, I've often seen when things go sideways, people can get out the blame game. And what we need to do when we need revival is bow and say, Lord, let it begin with me. Burr, I've heard you share a very famous story about somebody that drew a circle. And, can you refresh my memory on that illustration about revival?
Bert Harper Okay. It was a great revivalist, and it was during the period of the time of, you know, the latter part of the 1800s, and Gypsy Smith was the evangelist, and they would have what was called, you know, tent meetings. Like, they'd say brush arbors. And it did. It was usually during the period of time when they Weren't farming so much so the farmers could come aside and be a part of that. And, in place of it taking a chance on it being muddy, they would bring in sawdust and put it on the ground so that if it did rain it, you know, it wouldn't be muddy. And so Gypsy Smith would get there and he would stand before people and he would stand up and he would tell everybody to stand up with him. He said, take your right foot and make a half a circle around your body. Do now take your left foot and join that circle and start praying and say, lord, let revival begin inside this circle. So that was Gypsy Smith. If you don't know anything about him, you can check, it out. Man, what an evangelist he was. Alex.
Alex McFarland Amen. Amen. So, the answer is not for men to contend about with each other, but just to like, like that illustration. Lord, revive me. Revive, everything in this circle. And that, that's me.
Bert Harper It's that song. It's me. It's me. Oh, Lord, standing in need of prayer, isn't it, Alex?
Alex McFarland It is. And one thing in Hosea and in many of the Old Testament books, you'll see these, these, word pictures that I think are very vivid. Therefore you will stumble in the day, like I said, in broad open daylight, you ought to be able to see where you're going. But when a people, an individual, a, ah, denomination or a country has turned away from God, they're in the dark. You know, I think about some of our older mainline denominations that have gotten away from the authority of the Bible and they no longer lift up Jesus, the one and only Savior. And they don't have the courage to affirm biblical morality. They're just that they end up being like, wrong on everything, you know, and getting involved in all kind of stuff that churches and denominations have no business doing. When you have turned away from God, the source of life, truth, direction, redemption, you'll, you'll just be vulnerable to fall for anything. Verse 6. It's very famous. Adrian Rogers preached it. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you from being priests. For me now, this is really important. Israel's role. They were a priest to planet Earth on behalf of God. Because you have forgotten the law of your God. I will also forget your children. Bert. you and I could do a week of revival. Messages on Hosea4.6. I really do believe that.
Bert Harper I do as well. Now notice this. This is again, notice he starts with the priest in verse four the prophet in verse five and the people in verse six. As leadership goes, the people tend to follow. And so you was talking about the mainland denominator. Mainland, mainland denominations, mainline denominations. Alex, listen, leadership does matter, okay? Really. We talk about leadership here at AFA all the time with, Tim Wildmon. And the leadership that we have here, how Brother Don put us in the right direction, we stay in that right direction. But when the priests and the prophets are stumbling, when they're having to contend, the people, the people are going to be lacking. And here it is for lack of knowledge. And it begins at the top. And, verse six, again, as you said, notice the word knowledge repeated for lack of knowledge. And you have rejected knowledge. Again, this knowledge is not just information. It is information that has caused you to have a relationship. Like Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. They knew one another. It wasn't that God would just introduce them. This is Adam, this is Eve. No, it had to do with that intimate relationship. So they are not willing to have a relationship. A, knowledge of God, of him being close and us being close to him. They rejected that. And when you reject God, you're going to find out later, guess what happens. They go downward, even to pagan gods. And that's what they were doing. And they were doing that in the northern kingdom, but also in the southern kingdom that, you know, they going to get the warning as well. Israel is declared completely. Ephraim, is referred, has joined idols. Let him alone. That's in verse 17. But Judah, God says, you watch what happens to Israel and you better turn around, Judah. So this is, this is severe, punishment that's coming on Israel and Judah. Let it be a warning to you. I think that's good for us. We have seen what's happened to France. I mean, France is burning, all the rebellion that's going on and how they, what they let into their country any kind of restraint, what they did without God. Is that a warning to America? I think it is.
Alex McFarland Absolutely.
Bert Harper And so we need to take these warnings and very severely. So without knowledge, without that relationship with God, it's always going to go downhill.
Alex McFarland Well, and let me say this. Look at the basic thing in verse six, because you have forgotten the law of your God. Now, in the Hebrew, the word law is the word Torah. I'm sure you've heard people talk about the, the Torah, the Old Testament. and I looked in a commentary, T O R A H, if you've got Jewish, friends, you know, Torah is, is the Law, the Old Testament. And by the way, we've talked about this many times. Some of the words that the Bible uses, especially like in Psalm 119 for the scripture. Law, precepts, teachings, words, statutes, truths. Those are five words right there. God's revelation. Now, what's interesting, I looked in one commentary, it says all these things. Verse 6 of Hosea 4. Because you have forgotten, it wasn't that you never knew it. You did know it. And you ignored it so long, you suppressed it so much that it's no longer in. In your mind. The. And it says the. The Pentateuch, especially now. That's the first five books. P, E, N T means five. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and that includes the Ten Commandments. So when, when God says, look, Israel, you've forgotten my law, yes, it would mean what is all of the Old Testament at that point, but especially the moral code laid down. And that would include, prohibitions against idolatry, against adultery, against murder, against lying, against, you know, bearing, a false report, against dishonoring parents, even, you know, the Ten Commandments. This is Exodus 21:17. So, Bert, the law is foundational for God's blessing on any people group. And I, know this is Israel. But the law of gravity works for everybody. And the laws of God will work for everybody. One last thing. God says, because you've forgotten my law and forgotten me, I will forget your children. Now, what does that mean? It means there is. There can be generational repercussions for turning against God. Case, in point. Look at the usa.
Bert Harper Amen, Alex. You did it. Well, that whole thing. Now I want to go back one little bit, not to stay there, but just look at verse two after you see that and the things you said about the law. They're listed in verse two. Killing, stealing, committing adultery. The next line, they break all restraint. The restraint that is put is. We can call it limitations, you know, boundaries. We don't want any boundaries. We don't want any limits. If, If I'm a male and I want to be a female, I want that. If. If, I love. No matter what. No restraint. No. Who are the restraints for? The restraints is. Is for those who are living. I know I've used this before, but, it's unforgettable. Going to the Grand Canyon. And we had three, boys at that time. Hyperactive, like their dad a little bit. Okay. And we were, we were going. And they had a fence up around the cliff so you could look over but there was a boundary, and it said, go no further. You know, these restraints are good. So those obvious, oh, we want complete freedom. Listen, do you want to go down the highway with a car going 90 miles an hour with no brakes?
Caroline You better.
Alex McFarland No, thank you.
Bert Harper No, you better want restraint. And so those restraints that God has put upon a country, like the Ten Commandments or whatever, that's the reason there at the, the, you know, the supreme court with the 10 Commandments are posted there. Our, founding fathers knew that, that we need these restraints. So here it is. Because they were not restrained. What did they do? They rejected the knowledge. They rejected it. They went their way. They rejected all the restraint, all the guidelines that God had put. Let me just suggest those who are listening, don't let that happen in your life. Let God have his way in your life. Do not walk by sight, walk by faith. Let God guide you. Walk in the spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Those admonitions, they may be filled with some restraint and some limitations, but guess what, Alex, they're good limitations. They're good restraints, aren't they?
Alex McFarland Well, they are because God gives his word out of love. You know God. God is never trying to hinder us or squelch our joy or anything like that. Just like a loving parent sets boundaries, God lays down the moral guardrails of life out of love. Let, me read verse 7, Hosea 4:7. The more they increased, the more they sinned against me. I will change their glory into shame. All right, the word increase is. Is, well, blessing, literally, according to their becoming numerous. Now, what does that mean, Hosea 4:7? Well, they increased in population, they increased in prosperity. God bless them. And Bert, let me just say, I really think the default position of the Lord is to bless people. You know, I've seen it 10,000 times, and I've seen it in my own life. And I, look at our nation. If you follow God, live right, say your prayers, work hard, live right, do right, honor God. Invariably blessing is going to come along. It just does. God is a good God. But like verse seven, they increased. And you remember how God warned Israel, said, beware when you've come into the land and planted vineyards and built goodly houses, and you say to yourself, my hand hath done this. You know, poverty and judgment will come on. You see, I'll say this. I thought to you, there's nothing wrong with, with blessings, but we are to love the blesser, not just love the blessing. And let's not forget where the blessings come from. If we're up and about, we've got a job. We're mobile. It's the dear Lord that enabled us to get out of bed this morning, isn't it, Bert?
Bert Harper Hallelujah.
Alex McFarland Don't you think we need to be mindful? Look, there's good stuff all around us. But God, in his abundance, blessed us, and we've got to always remember that and always be grateful.
Bert Harper When you said that, I could not help but think of Romans. They worship the created things rather than the Creator. So, this is what we do. It's God. We thank God. Now, verse 8, 9, and 10. Let me read it. They eat up the sin of my people. They set their heart on their iniquity. Now listen to this. And it shall be like people like priests you ever heard. Like father, like son. Like people like priests. So I will punish them for their deeds and reward them for their deeds. Now listen to verse 10. For they shall eat, but not have enough m. They shall commit harlotry, but not increase because they have ceased obeying the Lord. If you want real blessing, children, those that would follow and those that have, you know, food. Follow the Lord. Obey him. Seek him with all your heart, soul and mind. Lean not in your own understanding, but in all your ways. Acknowledge him. He'll. He'll direct your paths. Alex McFarland from the highest of heights to the depths of the sea. Sea creations revealing your majesty. From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring. Every creature unique in the song that it seem all exclaiming indescribable.
Bert Harper Amen. Some of these songs, it's the hardest thing in the world for me to interrupt. I just want to tell you because he is indescribable. He is the greatest, greatest person you could ever know. Jesus Christ. I hope you know him well. That number, and we got lines that are open is 888-589-8840. If you've got a question. But yesterday was A, day of prayer, and I loved it. Two or three people called in wanting to. Wanting us to pray. Alex, for the election that's coming up, we want to do that each day and remind folks, you need to get out there, you need to vote, you need to prepare, you need to look at the issues, look at the candidates and look at those and what. Where they did the. If you don't know the people, look where their parties stand. And, one is for transgender all the way. That's the Democrat Party. They are just, They've been overtaken by radicals, honestly. Now, sometimes the Republicans are not where they should be, but they're holding restraint on those m. Ah, very important moral issues. So be sure and vote. But, Brent, I understand we have some prayer requests that came in. We want to take time to do that.
Caroline We do.
Alex McFarland Came in late yesterday, and I want you to know we do get those prayer requests, and we have been known to stand right there in the, in the, office and pray over these.
Bert Harper We have.
Alex McFarland We didn't get them on air, so just because they didn't get on air doesn't mean we don't pray for them. And I got some late yesterday, and I just happened to see them today because my ADHD doesn't let me catch everything. So, the first one is going to come from Dulce. He has several on here, including himself. he asked for prayers for Raul, who has cancer in his lungs.
Bert Harper Okay. Rahul. Okay.
Alex McFarland He's also asking for prayers for Jim, who has pancreatic cancer and is having a heart valve replacement.
Bert Harper Okay.
Alex McFarland And then he has one for Darren, who is experiencing seizures.
Bert Harper Okay, we got that.
Alex McFarland And Lloyd, who has heart issues.
Bert Harper Okay, man.
Alex McFarland And I'm not done.
Caroline He has.
Bert Harper That's quite a prayer list.
Alex McFarland I've got two more from him.
Bert Harper Okay.
Alex McFarland he's asking for, salvation for Wendy and Eileen.
Bert Harper M. Amen.
Alex McFarland And for himself, freedom from alcohol addiction. And. Brother, I know where you're coming from.
Bert Harper Okay, well, let's pray. Let's pray right now. Alex, artifact. I pray here.
Alex McFarland Yeah.
Alex McFarland And can I add one?
Bert Harper Yes, I'm writing it down.
Alex McFarland I got a message a couple hours ago. when I was in seminary at Liberty, I had a dear friend, Eladio Quintanilla. He was from up near Detroit. Godly. Godly. brother in seminary. And, Anyway, he was 56, and, he called me about a few months ago, and he had a lymphoma kind of cancer. And I just got a text from another seminary brother. That Eladio went to be with the Lord today, or, I'm sorry, two days ago, leaves, behind a wife, Jennifer, and three daughters. Eladio Quintanilla. And if you would pray for his widow and three young daughters. He was a godly brother. And, I guess I'm getting to that age where every now and then, some of your peers and friends go on.
Bert Harper You do, you do, you do. I understand. Got another one, Brent.
Alex McFarland One more, Bert. this is from Joel. He's asking for prayers for his Uncle Dwayne, who's in the hospital with pneumonia, sepsis, and heart stress.
Bert Harper Wow. Well, let me pray here. Father, I thank you that we can call upon you. I thank you for Dolce, as he called in. And he has quite a prayer list. Raul, Jim, Darren, Lloyd, all of these suffering physical ailments. And, God, you can meet them where they are. You know exactly what they need. And I pray you'd bring them into the procedures that are needed, the medicine, the whatever it is. And, God, that you would get glory for Wendy and Eileen, especially in their salvation. God, I pray that you would, bring them to. I know you're doing your work. And I pray, God, that there would be people that would be on the lookout for Wendy and Eileen and the witness that they would give to them of the Lord Jesus Christ. And we pray for Dulcie that that alcohol addiction, Father, would depart. Go away and stay away. Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit of God, as he puts those restraints upon him. And, Father, to stay away from such things that would draw him away. Father, I thank you for Alex's friend that La Tia. You know the name. I have a hard time. But his wife Jennifer, his three daughters, they're left. Father, they are hurting. I know that. And I pray God, that you would help them during this period of time. And then Dwayne, Father, he's got three ailments there. Just each one of them is enough. But, God, you are able to. And you're able to overcome any of the physical issues. We place this in your hand. And, Father, we come back to our election. We're praying for believers to vote. We're praying for them to have that biblical worldview, and they vote accordingly. And, Father, that they would let their voice be heard. In Jesus name, we pray this. Amen. Amen. Okay, this was. We going Wednesday, prayer day. That's all right.
Alex McFarland Wednesday is the day of prayer as well.
Bert Harper Amen. Well, let's go to William in Ohio for our first question of the day. William, go right ahead.
Caroline Thank you for having me. Appreciate your ministry.
Bert Harper Thank you, brother. Go ahead.
Caroline My question, my question was referring to the, pertaining to the Word of Faith movement, Charismatic Pentecostal. Just the extremes. I know I'm not lumping everyone in, but, okay, could you basically give a real quick, like, what is, what are their teachings and then how to, answer that?
Bert Harper Okay, Alex, I believe. Hey, speaking. If God has spoken to your heart. Okay, here's how I understand it, Alex. You take us in a different direction. You feel like I'm m. Wrong. Listen, God's word is more sure than what I hear. God speak into my heart. When those are combined, God's word and the Holy Spirit of God moving in my heart, my m. Mind to look at something, to approach something, and I speak that and I pray about that in faith. it's not me saying, oh, it's got to happen. No, it's me believing and trusting God. listen, I believe that with all my heart that when you combine what Holy Spirit says in our heart with the word of God and acts of faith, God does some amazing things. Is that close to anything, right?
Alex McFarland Yeah. You know, like so many things, the extreme overuse of the Word and the faith, is really a perversion of what is good Biblical truth. In the aftermath of the Second Great Awakening in the late 1800s, there was a thing called NewSong Thought that was really kind of occultic. And it. It basically said that we can call things into existence. And there were some, in the early part of the 20th century, they took the teachings that was. I'm not even going to name all the names because I really don't want to give any undue PR to some of these false teachers of 100 plus years ago. But, to the caller's question, the Word faith movement in its. In its worst form would be the idea that we are deity and we can call reality into existence. Now, on the one hand, let me be clear. I do think words matter. I mean, obviously God gave us his Word, the Bible, and we are to speak things that, are good and true and positive and uplifting. You know, I Think about Proverbs 15:1. Harsh words stir up wrath, you know, and, so we want to speak things that are good for the upbuilding of the body. So on the one hand, I'm not saying that words don't matter. Words do matter. But, Bert, the only one that can call reality into existence is God, not us.
Bert Harper Amen.
Alex McFarland You see what I mean?
Bert Harper And we speak with Authority when we speak from the word of God. they're wanting to know about dreams. Yes, God. I still believe God uses dreams, especially in the area of the mission field, when they've had dreams and then somebody tells about Jesus. And I've heard it so many times, that's who I was dreaming about. And that's reality. That is truth. But we have a sure word. It's the word of God. And let's live by that. And speak the word of God to your own heart. And in other words, when circumstances come along, Alex, my words may not change those circumstances, but me speaking truth, David encouraged himself in the Lord. What was that? He was speaking truth to his heart. And I. That's how I see it. When it's. When the reality of it, that's my thoughts.
Alex McFarland Okay, yes. there's more we could say about that, and I think we ought to devote a program to this.
Bert Harper Okay. I'm going to try to write it down and I'll try to remember word of faith. And let's do something about that. Okay. Let's go to Texas. Is it Mia or Maya?
Caroline It's Mia.
Bert Harper Mia. Thank you for calling. Yes, go right ahead.
Caroline Thank you all so much for your ministry. Brother Burton, and, Alex, I listen to you guys all the time. I've learned so much from you. I've had a question for a long time, and I was wondering if you could answer it. the first one was, when, God, cast down the devil and, the angels from heaven, they became demons. About how many were there, do you think? And is the day. Is the devil able to create more demons as time goes on, or it's just the number that were cast down. Does it remain the same? Because God is, of course, the only creator, but he can keep creating angels. So I was wondering about the number of demons. Okay.
Bert Harper Yeah, that's a good question. I'm not sure we've had that exact question. Alex, go ahead. You go first on this one.
Alex McFarland Yeah, I think the number of angels, both fallen angels and non fallen, I think that number is fixed. I don't think. And by the way, there's no plan of salvation for fallen angels. And I don't think angels can procreate because Jesus said in the resurrection, we're like the angels of heaven. And so there's demons can't create additional demons. And then the two thirds of the angels that didn't fall are not able to create more. More, angels. But you remember, how Jesus said, I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven, you know, and so when Lucifer was cast out, and, a third of the angels with him, they are cast down. But that's, Now, how many was it? We don't know. legions. Several legions. If a legion of Roman soldiers. It's been theorized it might have been 12,000. I don't know. There's a lot of demons. But God is more powerful, isn't he, Burke?
Bert Harper He really is. And greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. And again, the demonic forces are real. I, remember taking a seminary course and one of my professors said, you know, sometimes we're trying to treat, physically and psychologically issues that are demonic. I do believe that. But he said, just because your lawnmower doesn't start doesn't mean as a demon. So, you know, and we might be out of gas. Exactly. So give Satan too much credit, okay? Don't, give. Don't give him room. Matter of fact, I'm m going to be preaching on some of that this coming Sunday as we get ready for election day on the third. How. How Satan has come to kill, steal and what, Destroy. And if the foundations be destroyed, what will the righteous do? So Satan is trying to destroy that, and he's active in that, and he's got his demonic forces lined up to do so. But don't listen, make, much of Jesus. I found that when I speak on, spiritual warfare. Alex, I think even in a sermon, you can give Satan too much time. In other words, we're not ignorant of his devices, but we need to see this is how God does it. God's given us the power to overcome. Well, let's go to Kansas and talk to James. James, thank you for calling. Go right ahead.
Caroline Hi, Alex and Bert. Thank you so much. As, you've heard so many times, you're a blessing to so many of us. Here is my, request and my question. You, are both men of the Word, and So, you know, 2nd Chronicles 7:14, in Isaiah 37, verses 14 through 20, commonly identified as Hezekiah's Prayer for deliverance. just two more. Psalm 81, verses 13 through 15. if my people would only listen to me, I would deliver them from their enemies. Ephesians 6:18. With the upcoming election, I am, as you both are, encouraging people to vote. My thought is the first thing we need to be doing is what it says there. God has given us a formula right there in Second Chronicles 7:14. If my people who are called by my name will help humble themselves and pray. It's great to have an I voter guide website to educate people, but Hezekiah didn't have an I voter Guide. And I'm, I'm amazed. I'm amazed at the, the, the ratio, that the. On American Family Radio, other Christian radio stations that I listen to, the. The number of times that I hear the word vote versus how many times I hear people, leaders encouraging people pray.
Bert Harper Amen. James. Well, time is, Is coming close, so we're going to do that. I think you do both. you do pray. You do vote. The reason it's talked about voting right now so so much. James. I believe in the past believers were, were praying and seeking God, but to encourage them to pray and to vote. and the I Voter Guide is a good place to start. Yeah, you do that. But I agree with you. Guess what? The word of God's even a better place when you can find out what those are going on. Alex, would you speak to James?
Alex McFarland James, thanks for the call. Yeah, it's both and not either or. Sure, we need to vote and do the things humanly possible, but we need to intercede and pray and ask God to do the things that only he can do.
Bert Harper Alex, you've been saying that this whole year. Pray for America, pray for revival. You have done good at reminding me. Hey, Bert, you need to pray about what's coming up, and I appreciate that, Alex.
Alex McFarland Well, to God be the glory. my home is heaven, my king is Jesus. But I do love America and I care about this country. Don't you, Bert?
Bert Harper I do. I've got children and grandchildren. And guess what? Missions from America has been the greatest mission movement on the face of this earth since our founding. And if there's no other reason for you to vote and pray and seek God so we can share the good news with a whole wide world. Thank you for listening to Exploring the Word.

In this episode of Exploring the Word, hosts Bert Harper and Alex McFarland continue their study of Hosea, exploring the prophet’s marriage to Gomer as a vivid picture of God’s redeeming love for Israel, and for people who have wandered from God. They reflect on grace, restoration, and Hosea’s repeated call to return to the Lord.
The discussion turns to Hosea 4, where Israel is put on trial for abandoning truth, mercy, and knowledge of God. Harper and McFarland consider the consequences of forgetting Scripture, rejecting moral boundaries, and allowing sin to shape a society. They also discuss the importance of humble, godly leadership and the need for personal revival to begin within each believer.
Listeners’ questions broaden the conversation to the Word of Faith movement, whether demons can multiply, and the relationship between prayer and civic engagement. The hosts close by praying for callers and their loved ones, and encouraging believers to seek God, stand on biblical truth, and pray for the nation.
