Discussion of Gospel, Resurrection, and Introduction to Dr. Ronnie Floyd's Ministry and Accomplishments
Jeff Chamblee Welcome to Real Truth for Today with Pastor Jeff Schrieve, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Texarkana, Texas. Now here's Pastor Jeff.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, good Monday morning and welcome to Real Truth for Today. Pastor Jeff here. Hope you had a great weekend. Wanted, as we kick off the program to read from First Corinthians, chapter 15. You know, First Corinthians, chapter 15, such an important chapter of scripture. In this, chapter Paul, he defines the gospel and then he talks about the resurrection. And he says this about himself. For I am the least of the apostles and not fit to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God, I am what I am. And his grace toward me did not prove vain, but I labored even more than all of them. Yet not, not I, but the grace of God with me. So when I think of that verse, there's a particular guy I think of who has labored, with all his might over the years to make a difference for the kingdom to be salt and light and to impact the church and the world. And that is my friend, Rodney Floyd. Dr. Rodney Floyd served for more than 32 years as senior pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas. Under his leadership, the church grew from 3,700 members, 20,000. He baptized more than 25,000 people and that church planted 150 churches. He's the former president of the Southern Baptist convention from 2014 to 2016, and he later served as president and CEO of the SBC executive committee. He's also led the National Day of Prayer Task Force.
Dr. Ronnie Floyd's Early Life, Conversion to Christ, and Call to Ministry
Prolific author whose books include works on prayer, fasting, leadership and and a daily devotional for leaders. Dr. Floyd, welcome to the program today.
Dr. Floyd Thank you, Jeff, and appreciate your kind words and, really joyful to be with you today.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, you look great, my friend. And, you've been at this a long time. You came to know Christ, if my research is correct, when you were just a 15 year old teenager, is that right?
Dr. Floyd That's correct, Jeff. I came to Christ, obviously grew up in the church, and all that, and my parents were totally committed, but it was on a Saturday night in October, back in 1971, that God really came and made a major difference in my life.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Okay. Up until that time, were you a relatively good kid or were you getting in trouble?
Dr. Floyd Oh, I was regularly a pretty good kid. I mean, I got in trouble some, but I mean, hey, I was raised in the church, man. I didn't want to face Daddy nor either one. I knew God also, so, I didn't want to face either one of them in a bad way.
Pastor Jeff Schreve All right, so your call to the ministry, when did that come?
Ronnie Floyd's Journey to Ministry, Seminary Experience, and Development of Discipline
Dr. Floyd That came, within about six to seven months after that. Jeff. I always wanted to be a football coach. I still like to be a football coach. I grew up in Texas high school football and, and love, all that, and still, love all that to this day at all levels. And, but God really, really, impressed on me deeply that God was calling me. And I've never looked back on it. And, you know, I'm so thankful for the ministry God has given me and the ministry God is still giving me. I'm, I'm deeply grateful to him.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Okay. Dr. Floyd, you're, a very,
Pastor Jeff Schreve very much a go getter. you don't let the grass grow under your feet. I remember telling somebody we were talking about, presidents, that have served men that have served as president of Southern Baptist Convention. I said, well, I don't know anybody who has worked as tirelessly as Rodney Floyd when he was the president of the sbc. And, I admire that. My wife is very disciplined. She gets lots of things done, and that is not my natural personality, so that's hard for me. Would you say discipline? Discipline is something that's a, gift the Lord has given you as a believer, or were you, were you disciplined even before you got saved?
Dr. Floyd I think, I think I obviously had some discipline, before then in my life. but I really believe that God really used my seminary experience as well as pastoring full time at the very same time. And of course, when I went to seminary, there was not Such, no such thing as online courses. You know, I would drive back and forth to Southwest Western four days a week, you know, you know what that's like. And, and a two time graduate at Southwestern Seminary that I still love to this day and deeply appreciate all those matters.
God's Blessings and Opportunities in Ronnie Floyd's Ministry and Commitment to Reaching the World
But I think all of that really taught me the discipline and just the entire doing all those things at once. And then, you know, the things that God has given me, I mean not only did the Lord bless me with pastoring, an amazing church here that is a Miracul is a miraculous story, of God's power, but God opened up doors, you know, in my life and wanted me to serve in places across the nation and the world. And, and you know, through all that the capacity of leadership grew, Jeff. And I think it was the grace of God and the blessing of the Lord and God taught me, you know, how to get up early in the morning years and years ago. And you know, that, that, that really helps anyone, have a day that, that can be filled with a lot of stuff. And I'm deeply, deeply grateful and I still, I still are very busy and very committed to this. And you know, I take it seriously. The world needs the gospel and I can't get that out of my heart. And God has called me to preach and God has called me to reach the world for Christ. And I will do anything, anytime, anywhere that I can to to make that happen.
Ronnie Floyd's 32-Year Pastorate at Cross Church and Its Remarkable Growth
Pastor Jeff Schreve Yes, we're talking to Dr. Rodney Floyd. And Rodney Floyd was pastor for 32 years at Cross Church. Now it was First Baptist Springdale at one time, isn't that right?
Dr. Floyd That is correct, Jeff. It was First Baptist Church of Springdale, Arkansas when I got here. let me, let me. This is a very significant day in my life. Okay? Please understand. It was 40 years ago today.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Oh, wow.
Dr. Floyd Today that I began my ministry at the First Baptist Church of Spring, Springdale, Arkansas on Sunday, October 26 that year. And you know, man, what an amazing thing, you know, what, what a glory to God. I was there almost 33 years and you know, just, ah, a delightful, delightful experience. And you know, when we came, we had a gym and we had two buildings. And today, you know, it's just an amazing fellowship that just God's, God's, you know, God's miraculous story. Only he can create it. And the miracle still continues. I mean, four campuses today, reaching thousands and thousands every week. And you know, this region has exploded, Jeff. I mean this is the home of Walmart JB Hunt, Tyson Foods, and about 1500 plus, companies that have, that have presence here in northwest Arkansas. When I, when I moved here with 180,000 people in two counties, now there's, now there's 650,000 people in those same two counties. And God is really, you know, flourished the area. It's a fantastic place to live and so grateful to God that God taught me a lot right here because I had some incredible leaders in my church and praise God for it.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, it's one of the most beautiful places in the nation, I think is northwest Arkansas, Springdale and the 540 corridor coming from Fort Smith to Springdale and Rogers. unbelievable. And if you live anywhere, in driving distance to that place, it's worth it to go there, just to make the drive. I mean, it's just gorgeous. okay, so when you came to Springdale, how seasoned were you as a pastor?
Dr. Floyd I'd been pastoring in Texas.
Ronnie Floyd's Early Pastoral Experience and Education in Texas
You know, I was called to be a pastor, really, 10 years earlier, while I was a student at Howard Paine University. I was a junior and you know, started pastoring the church on the weekends. Gina and I got married four months later. I think I got hired by that church mainly because Gina was a piano major and they needed a pianist. But I had the benefit of, you know, being the preacher as well. And so, you know, that's where it all started. And so, you know, I ministered there and you know, and then, you know, went to seminary, stayed ministering there, and then I was called to a full time ministry down, below Dallas and did that and drove back and forth to seminary four days a week, 50 plus miles a day, and my masters in three years and my doctorate in three years. And you know, God was a blessing and blessed me greatly and all that. And you know, I, I was nourished by a lot of churches in Texas. You know, I'm so thankful for my time there. I love Texas. Still love it, still miss it. And it's still home in one way, but I've been here so long now. and you know, this is where our lives had been and God has placed our lives here for this, obviously this part of our lives.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Okay, so just curious, growing up as a kid, who did you root for?
Ronnie Floyd's Passion for Football and Transition to Razorback Fan
Your football fan? You rooted for the University of Texas?
Dr. Floyd absolutely. 90 miles from our home. Everything was orange, it was beautiful. I won all the games in the front yard, acting like I was a Texas Longhorn. And, growing up, and grew, up on the Texas Longhorns greatly. And then of course, the Dallas Cowboys were a part of my life every day. And you know, my goal was to one day be the head football coach at the Longhorns and then become the head football coach of the Dallas Cowboys. And based off of some of those years, I think they could have used me, perhaps, but, you know, I would have loved the opportunity, but still love it today. And you know, I'm a Razorback now, man, but I'm still a Longhorn. I mean, I live, you know, 15 minutes from the University of Arkansas. Had tickets there even all these years now. So, that we've been, here, you know, so we endure, ah, it all way to the end, and we'll be saved.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, anybody that knows college football knows that Arkansas hates Texas. And so it's. So you come to be the pastor of right there at the university. I mean, Fayetteville is, is a stone's throw from where you are. And you, have to keep your, your burned orange down to a minimum, I would imagine.
Dr. Floyd Oh, yeah, I know.
Ronnie Floyd's Role as a Pastor and His Involvement with University of Arkansas Coaches
I don't ever go out in orange. You know, these people, they go out and boast their colors like that. I don't, I don't. I don't do that. I, I was a pastor, you know, and I didn't want to offend people and I was against. Because I wanted to be Adam. And I became a Razorback fan. I mean, we had coaches in our church. We still do. I mean, you know, all, all those relationships through all those years. I did the coaches Bible studies for several years now. Nick does them and has been doing them as the pastor for about 10 years now. Really not, not as a pastor, but he's been doing them for. For about 10 years. But he became pastor here six years ago.
Reflections on Watching the Razorbacks Play Texas and the Decision to Leave Cross Church
And so, you know, the, the Lord has been so gracious. you know, I'm. I mean, listen, I've. I've sat in the stands and watched the Razorbacks lose to Texas, and I've set the stands. And sometime every now and then, I might see the Razorbacks beat Texas, but that's. That doesn't happen a lot. And. But I love them all and so I'm grateful.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, Rodney, one of the, key decisions in your life came a few years ago where you left Cross Church to become the president of the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. Tell, us how you came to that point.
Ronnie Floyd's Difficult Decision to Lead the SBC Executive Committee and Past Experiences
Dr. Floyd Well, it was a very difficult decision. I always Thought I would leave if I ever left. I always thought I would leave and you know, perhaps lead a seminary, or something like that, which I would have, you know, loved to have done as well and still would. But the, you know, God brought this opportunity towards me and I just deeply felt called pastor. You know, you, you know, you can't understand all, you know, you can understand it, but we can't always understand, you know, the Lord's timing. And so after the course of, you know, dealing with them for three or four months, you know, God, God issued that call. And you know, from the time I, from the time I resigned pastor until the day I left, I cried every day. And I'm not a crier. I cried every day because, because I love this church. I agree. The leaving of this because I, part of me never thought I would leave. the vast majority of, part of me thought I would never leave. but God had me, ready to do that. I had been on the executive committee for 10 years earlier in my ministry during the controversy time of the Southern Baptist Commission. And I was a boy preacher man, my 1990s. I mean I was, I was in some meetings that just, whoa. I mean they were, you know, those were, those were challenging days. And you know, and I felt like God had prepared me to do it. And you know, two of the greatest years I've ever had in my life was when I was the president of the Southern Baptist Convention. I mean, it was a joy.
Gratitude for Service as President of the Southern Baptist Convention and Program Sign-off
And I had done that in 2016, as you made a note about that. And so I'm just grateful to God. And yes, it was a joy to be there. And, thank you for the opportunity today.
Pastor Jeff Schreve We're talking to Dr. Rodney Floyd here on Real Truth. For today, Pastor Jeff Schrieve on American Family Radio will be right.
The Preborn Network's Ministry to Women Facing Unplanned Pregnancies and Support for Life
This June marks three years since the overturn of Roe. But did you know that since then the number of abortions has surged to a 10 year high? Preborn network clinics continue to support women facing unplanned pregnancies, showering them with God's love and providing free ultrasounds. When a mother meets her baby on ultrasound and hears their heartbeat, she's twice as likely to choose life.
Dr. Floyd It was like the beginning of my healing journey. They do an ultrasound. That's when everything changed. When I saw my baby and when
Jeff Chamblee I heard her heartbeat, that was it.

Pastor Jeff Shreve Welcomes Dr. Ronnie Floyd and Discusses His Time as SBC Executive Committee President
Jeff Chamblee This is Real Truth for today. Podcasts of the program are available on the podcast [email protected] now back to Pastor Jeff Schrieve.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Welcome back to the program. Pastor Jeff Schrieve here talking to Dr. Dr. Rodney Floyd. Rodney was pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas for 32 years. Saw amazing growth and, turned that over to his son Nick, who's doing a great job and former, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, 2014-2016. And then he served as the president and CEO of the SBC executive committee. Dr. Floyd, that was right at the time of Cove and, the sexual assault allegations and just a powder keg of issues, that would have been very difficult for any of us to navigate. tell me about your experience there. I know it didn't last as long as we had hoped as we thought it would.
Dr. Floyd's Experience as SBC Executive Committee President During COVID-19 Pandemic
you were there for two and a half years, so why so short?
Dr. Floyd Well, you know, when I went there, Jeff, you know, God, I felt, call me there. And I still believe that. And you and loved my time there. I mean, I really did. I loved it. I felt like I was in the groove and, and in the flow of it. And, you know, I started right before the 2019 convention in Birmingham. All right. like, I was there two weeks before that, which, you know, in that convention there were a lot of things that, that already started being revealed in a lot of things. And, with that, and, you know, then you entered. Nine months later, I entered a pandemic. You know, if I would have known we were going to have a pandemic, I would have loved to stay at my church, you know, because the caring of a pastor, you know, you, you know, you want to, you want to be there, but here I am in this brand new city that we lived in that we loved. I mean, we love living in that region. It was beautiful and wonderful place to live and enjoyed the fellowship of all and, and but then, man, you're in this environment that just totally changes.
Navigating the Challenges of Leading the SBC Executive Committee Amidst Pandemic and Societal Upheaval
And the longer the pandemic went and you just imagine all of the different moments and the ebbs and the flows of American life during that next couple of years in America. Really, it lasted, really more than that. Even the hangover of all that stuff in America. Well, the spc, the churches of the SPC did not Escape that. I mean, they had to live in it and they had to learn how to navigate all those challenges. And I always tell people when they ask about that, I said, well, here's what you need to imagine. You know, you're, you know, you know, how difficult it was to navigate one church. Just imagine navigating, a convention of churches with about just under 50,000 churches, and they come literally from every state in the country and leading the executive committee of the Southern Mass Convention, which, was an incredible privilege and it was a joy to do it. But I mean, you're having people, you're having representatives. I mean, we had 86 trustees from, from every state convention. Every state was represented. And so it was a very different kind of, of leadership model for that. I learned a lot. I already felt like I knew a lot, but, but I learned a lot in that process. but it would have been a totally different thing if the pandemic had not come.
The Impact of the Pandemic on the Southern Baptist Convention and Missed Opportunities for Connection
I mean, the pandemic made it just, it just threw everything in America out of sorts. You couldn't travel the way you needed to travel. You could not communicate the way you want to communicate, you know, in relationship to one on one. And to have those moments. And, you know, one of the devastating blows of, of all of this is the Southern Maps Convention couldn't meet in 2020. You know, the convention was, I mean, it was only. We've only canceled the commission three times in our history as a denomination, you know, and that was one of those times. So because of the pandemic, which really was a grievous experience because we were going to Orlando and we had big plans for that. And I don't think any of this stuff that ended up coming off because we didn't have a chance to deal with the stuff within the time that we should have dealt with, right? The lack of time and the lag of relationships, you know, the relational dynamic that it takes and all that, a lot of things were misunderstood and a lot of untruth was swirling all over the country about the country and about all the stuff.
The Mental and Emotional Toll of the Pandemic on Pastors, Churches, and Individuals
I mean, you know, what, what it was. You lived in it. And every pastor and every church and every American in that season of time, their, lives were affected, their mental states, their emotional states, their, their view. It was real hard for people to keep a, James 1:5 mentality. I'm going to get the wisdom of God for today. This is about today, following God. How am I going to do that rather than. Well, ABC News says this and, and you know, the White House says this, and you know, Pope so and so says this. I mean, you know, I mean, you know, I mean, it, was a bizarre, unique time. I tell people all the time, you know what I would have, my goal, I would have, I thought I was going to go to be called there.
Ronnie Floyd's Initial Intentions for His Role and Unforeseen Challenges Faced
In fact, I told Gina, listen, we're going to look at this like a call to missions, and we're going to be there probably seven to 15 years of our lives. We'll just see what God does. But I said, we won't stay less than seven. Well, you know, I mean, that was our heart, that was what we were going to do. But decisions were made that made it very difficult for us to do our job. And decisions were made that put, the SBC in some very, very challenging times. Should they have been made? You know, I don't know the answers to all that. I wish some of them had not been made. Yeah.
Difficult Decisions Regarding Indemnification and Attorney-Client Privilege at the SBC Executive Committee
But I don't know the answers to all that. And I can't analyze all that. I tell people if I were to go called the Southern Episode Convention, you know, five years before, it had been totally different, or five years after it, it had been totally different. But God had me, for whatever reason to go there for that season and that time and with certain decisions were made relating to one specific thing in relationship to, you know, indemnifying the group that, led the effort in relationship to, the discovery of all those things or, or the report of the discovery of all those things, you know, that I couldn't, I couldn't sign that document.
The Financial and Personal Costs of the SBC Executive Committee's Decisions
I was the chairman and the president executive of the, of the, of the Southern Memphis Convention. I, I mean, that means, I'm saying for myself that I feel like this is a good move. I, I can't do that. I couldn't do that because how could I identify something forever?
Dr. Floyd And that, that decision costs the Southern Mass Convention millions and millions and millions of dollars. And only the Lord knows you know about all that.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Yeah. Okay, so, so Dr. Floyd, most listeners, we have a lot of pastors, Sunday school teachers, church people that are listening today. It's hard for them to understand how the Southern Baptist Convent, I like to kind of put it into church terms because people know how their local church works.
Understanding SBC Transparency Issues Through Local Church Analogies and Dr. Floyd's Call
I've, talked to Willie Rice and Thom Ascol and others about this. There's a big issue where Southern, Baptists, have questions about transparency, and they want to know certain things and they seem like they're getting stonewalled and I take it back to the local church and I say, well, that wouldn't work in the local church because if you had members that were upset about how the money is being spent, we would not hide that from them. That's their gifts and tithes. It's the Lord's money. your experience at the executive committee, if you put it into church terms, you came to be the pastor. What was that church like? Did you have a lot of people that were, against the pastor, not wanting the direction, or split in a bunch? You know, a church can't work if it's going in 10 different directions. So how would you describe it in those terms?
Dr. Floyd Well, when I was called there, you know, I, I received a fantastic vote.
Dr. Floyd's Assessment of the SBC's Condition Upon His Arrival and the Growing Challenges
I mean, I only had 1 of 86 people vote against me. Okay. So, I mean, and, and really I, I had the support of the people in a great way. And and so I didn't feel that I had, you know, people against me. Here's what I think. I think when I look at, I, I, you know, I'm gonna, you know, I'm gonna like, just put it on the table here. All right?
Okay.
Dr. Floyd I feel like, I really feel like that I underestimated where the Southern Baptist Convention was. We were already on fire. Okay. And I'm not talking about a good fire. All right? Okay. But things had changed.
The Shifting Political Landscape Within the SBC and Overestimating Leadership Capabilities
I mean, when I left being the president in 2016, I mean, I never saw anything like that.
Dr. Floyd But I think in 2018, that convention in Dallas, things started changing in a real negative way. And I don't understand all that. But you remember, that's when the spc one, if you're over having Mike Pence and some other. I m mean the Vice President, United States, and a great evangelical follower of Jesus Christ, why would we not have him and celebrate that? But, you know, the craziness started. And and so with that, you know, I think I far underestimated how much the SBC was already on fire. And I far overestimated my ability as a leader to fix it. And see, here it is.
The President and CEO's Role as Influence Rather Than Authority within the Autonomous SBC Structure
The president and CEO of the executive committee really doesn't have any authority. It's a position of influence.
Dr. Floyd I can't tell a church what to do.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Right.
Dr. Floyd I can't tell an entity what to do. I mean, here's, here's. I remember explaining this to, my board, here at Cross Church, full of incredible leaders, all right? Some of them major company leaders, big, time company leaders. And I remember telling that. So you're telling, and this is what they said. So you're telling me you're going to go and you're going to leave our church, you're going to go and help, help this denomination. And you're not, you don't have any authority over these churches and over any of these entities and over any of these things. You're crazy. Why are you doing this?
Navigating the Autonomous Nature of Churches and State Conventions within the SBC
I said, man, what God called and blah, blah, blah. That's what you have because you have 50, 000 autonomous churches with 12 autonomous entities with, with 40 church three, I think, or 42 state conventions that cover all the states. they're autonomous, Everybody's autonomous. And what you do is you work together where you can. All right. I mean that's really what happens. And so it's very difficult to navigate all that. Okay, now with that status Pastor, look at it this way. Then the dynamic negative fire and the fires that happened in the pandemic all over the country, I mean it was a, it was a mighty wind that blew. It was very difficult, very challenging in every way.
Dr. Floyd's Efforts to Support Missionaries and the Cooperative Program Amidst Pandemic Shutdowns
And I did my best to serve. You know, I did, I was gonna, you know, Gina and I had even talked about getting in the car and going to every state and driving to every state in the country, calling meetings with as many Baptists as possible and say, listen, we got to make sure we don't have to bring our missionaries home. We got to make sure that we can cover all that needs to be covered in the cooperative program. I mean, I, I mean I would already made it, made some strategic plans. I mean, I was in, I was committed because, you know how everything shut down. It all shut down. They wouldn't let you go anywhere, anything. And it was crazy. And and so it was a unique time. But we praise God and we leave that, you know, in the Lord's hands.
Personal Devastation from Leaving the SBC Executive Committee Due to Ineffective Service
I mean, it was, when I left, I mean, you know, it was devastating to me personally. I left on my own. I felt like, you know, I, I just could not be effective under the situation. I mean, how do you, how does the legal entity of the Southern Baptist Convention say that you're going to give up attorney client privilege as the legal entity of the sbc?
Pastor Jeff Schreve Right. That's just idiotic.
Dr. Floyd And two, and two of your long term attorneys resign within days of that decision.
Dr. Floyd Because of the situation. You know, and you know, I could, I have made it. Yeah, I think I could have made it. And I think that, you know, a lot of me wishes I would have stayed.
Dr. Floyd But at the same time it just, it just, I didn't feel like I could be effective, you know, and any longer. And so you leave that in God's hands.
The Decline of Biblical Worldviews in America and its Impact on the SBC
Pastor Jeff Schreve Right. I had George Barner on the program, Rodney, last week and, or the week before and he was, he was saying, that in his research, very few Americans have a biblical worldview and less than 50% of pastors and people in ministry have a biblical worldview. were you shocked to maybe see that play out in the executive committee where people are thinking less about what does the Lord say versus what does the culture say?
Dr. Floyd Sure, absolutely. Yes. I saw it all in the sbc, you know, and not, simply in the, in, in the executive committee. You know, the executive committee got put in a very difficult place. It was a place that really, the bottom line is, you know, we really had a constitutional crisis. That's really what happened. Because the SPC executive committee was asked to do something that was totally, it needed to be studied.
Constitutional Crisis within the SBC and the Decision to Waive Attorney-Client Privilege
Do we really want to do this?
Pastor Jeff Schreve You're talking about waving.
Dr. Floyd Waving, yeah, yeah. They are waiving the privilege. I mean, it was not about the sex abuse thing. I mean, my Lord, nobody would stay and even, even put up with sex abuse. There was, you know, none of us would have ever done that. We were very clear about that all those times. I was clear about that from the 2019 convention, when I started. And so, so all of that was, you know, it was there. We were not going to put up with that. We were already really aggressive in that. But the point is that, ah, you know, none of that mattered, to some people because they wanted it this way. Well, we should have a good way.
The Need for Time and Study in Addressing Complex Issues within the SBC
We needed the time. You know what, as a leader, you would have said as a pastor, listen, church, let's take a time out, out and let's come back to this. But we need to study this. We couldn't do that because of the winds of the current culture.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Yes. We're talking to Dr. Rodney Floyd here on Real Truth for today, Pastor Jeff Schrieve. When we come back, we're going to talk about, the pastor and politics, something that, Rodney knows a lot about as a man who stands for. For truth. You're listening to American Family Radio. We'll be right back.
The Significance of Prayer and Fasting in Dr. Ronnie Floyd's Life and Ministry
Jeff Chamblee If you'd like to contact Pastor Jeff, email pastor jeffromhishheart.org now back to Real Truth for today with Pastor Jeff Schrieve.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Welcome back to the program. Pastor Jeff here We're talking to Dr. Rodney Floyd. Dr. Floyd has done so much in his, his life and God has used him in great, great ways, building a great church and making such an impact on the Southern Baptist Convention. the other thing that he's done is he's written extensively on the subject of prayer and fasting and I've been blessed by reading his books on that and been convicted. Rodney, you have fasted, done a 40 day fast at least two times that I know of. Has it been more than that?
Recognizing the Assault on America and the Red-Green Alliance's Devastating Potential
Dr. Floyd Yes, it is. I'm not sure how many, but yes, I have gone through that experience for some reason. God seemingly put that on my heart at times and you know, every time the Lord has done a major work in my life.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, I know you're somebody who loves America and you, you recognize that America is under tremendous assault. So the combination I talked about this Sunday I'm preaching a sermon series. Religion, politics. And it's already made some people mad just that you'd even talk about that subject. But I talked about the weird combination of the Islamists teaming up with the Marxists for the Rick Green alliance and the devastation that that will bring, basically the destruction and overhaul of America if that takes place. And ah, we have candidates Zoram Mamdani and El Said in, different ones, just spells disaster. And so we have pastors that don't want to touch that with a ten foot pole.
Pastoral Responsibility to Speak Boldly on Faith and Politics in a Deceptive Culture
You weren't like that when you were pastoring. you got up and you spoke boldly and very clearly. I think if I remember correctly, didn't you have cutouts of both candidates in maybe in 2004 when Bush was running? yeah. I mean you didn't, you didn't pull any punches or make it unclear. How do, how do you think pastors are doing, with that subject today?
Dr. Floyd I think some do well and some, you know, they don't. They don't do that and that. Shame on them. as a pastor you need to preach the word of God.
Standing for Truth in a Deceptive Culture and the Assault on America's Values
I mean yesterday I've been preaching a series in the Book of Titus. I've been a interim pastor at a, at a church in Fort Smith, Arkansas for a few months as well as preaching other places as well on some of those Sundays. But, I've helped them. And yesterday, I was, I preached on that incredible passage in Titus 1, verse 10 through 16. And I talked about standing for truth in a deceptive culture. And that's what I talked about, Pastor, because, I'm so convicted about how deceptive the culture is. And I even mentioned this whole element, not only simply of what was happening and that's time, in those churches, in creed and all the challenges that were given by the Apostle Paul there for Titus to do. But the, but the. I said, listen, in America we're under the same assault. I mean, we're being deceived.
The Importance of Biblical Frameworks in Addressing Political and Social Issues
Everything. Deception is everywhere. And we better get our, get our heads together and understand if we think it's, if we think that all of these isms out here that are, that are now influencing everything is good, that's not good at all. You know, and I started naming all of those and talking about that unashamedly. And you know, you know, you have to stand and it's not about, it's not about a party. It's about the word of God. These are biblical issues. You were referring to barn a while ago. We need the biblical framework of this. What did Paul tell them about when he mentioned in Titus chapter one, you remember that verse in that first chapter when he said, you need to be careful of the, of the circumcision party?
The Necessity of Standing for Truth Regardless of Personal Cost
And then he said, silence them. Silence them. M so. And the point is, is that we need to be willing to get in there and stand for truth regardless of what it cost us in our lives.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Okay. So, Rodney, if we had, Jon the Baptist come back today, he was pastoring a church. I had my seminary professor of preaching, Wayne MacDill. I don't know, you might know Dr. Wayne MacDill, but I asked him one time because I feel like God, has given me, you know, kind of the gift and the calling of a prophet. And I said, how does that work in the pastorate?
John the Baptist's Prophetic Role and its Parallel to Modern Pastors
I said, how would Jon the Baptist do as a pastor? He said, I think he'd do terr. Because he would just be blistering people all the time. He said. He said, I don't know if Jon was tempered very well. Jon, the Baptist comes back and gets, on national television. What does he say to, to the pastors and to the country?
Dr. Floyd Well, that's a big question. I think he tells it like it is, Pastor. I think he tells it like it is.
Pastors' Duty to Speak Truth and Provide Direction to Their Congregations
And when they take him to prison, you know, and his head might still end up on a silver platter and and that may happen to pastors one day in America. and you know, I just would encourage any pastor today, listen, you're not going to do the wrong thing. When you stand up before your church and, you can just count on it, there are people in your church that are waiting for you to give them direction. You know, if we don't speak to our people, Jeff, who's going to speak to them? If we don't teach them what the Bible says does the right thing, then who is going to do it?
Making Way for the Lamb of God and Preserving Religious Liberty in America
Well, Jon the Baptist was very clear again and again and again that his role was to make the way for the coming Lamb of God. And, I mean, we need to make the way and stand for truth so we don't lose the blessing of religious liberty in America, the blessing of living in the greatest country of the world. I mean, we. We don't understand how. How close we are on the edge at times of losing some of the things that we cherish so much in our lives.
Navigating Political Choices When Candidates Are Flawed and Their Directions Diverge
Pastor Jeff Schreve let me ask you this, Dr. Floyd. So I had a caller, this was a week or so ago, and they said, you know, we're praying for this election. We're praying that righteousness would prevail. Obviously, we're choosing candidates that nobody's the Apostle Paul on the ticket. You're choosing between two flawed, in some instances, very flawed candidates. But one stands for an America that's going in a particular direction, and one wants it to go in another direction. Those directions couldn't be further apart. How do you view in your mind when you have people that are, We'll put it in 1 Kings 18 language. I'm for Yahweh, but I vote for bail.
The Inconsistency of Professing Faith While Voting Against Biblical Principles
How does that work? How do you have somebody that says, yeah, I love the Lord, I'm a Christian and I follow Jesus, but I vote with the pro abortionists and then the pro lgbtqia. I vote with the, I hate Israel crowd. How does that compute?
Dr. Floyd It doesn't compute. you know, why in the world would you not follow what you say you believe and who you believe in? Why in the world would somebody do that? And don't claim that you know the Bible. You don't know the Bible. I mean, you. If you know the Bible and you read the Bible, and I've read through the Bible for years and years and years, every year. And, I'm a chronic reader of the Bible. And, you know, you don't. You don't see that in the Scripture. You know, we, We, We.
The Distinction Between Professing and Possessing Faith and the Importance of Standing Firm
We can profess even. Even back to that Titus 1 passage, he said, there are people that profess faith, but they do not possess the faith. I mean, that's really the heartbeat of what's going on. You can put profess, but you've got to possess the faith. And possessing the faith is when you follow what you say, you believe. God says, and we have to be strong enough to encourage them to stand. And pastors who say, you know, this, and then they go this way and they're going to start. I saw, I saw certain political leaders supposedly, you know, in recent days beginning to support other candidates away from what they have historically done. How do you do that? You, you.
The Bizarre Times We Live In and the Compounding Effects of Social Media
They know better than that. That's not what America is. Why would we do that? I mean, but, you know, we're, we're living in a very bizarre time in history. And, I don't know, Jeff, if it's just the deep sinfulness of where we are or it's the compounding of the soup of the social, you, know, matters of life out here in social networking that just make everything worse than we had ever known it before.
Contemplating the Possibility of America's Decline and the Call to Fight for Righteousness
But we live in extraordinary times, very challenging times.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Well, getting back to that, one caller, he said, how do you know that this isn't just the Lord's will, that the return of Christ is right around the corner? America doesn't show up in prophetic scripture. And so maybe this is God's plan to, to bring America to naught. And I mean, we don't know that. We don't know when the rapture is coming. We need to fight until the very last, our very last breath. But, could you see that being a scenario?
Dr. Floyd Well, sure. I mean, I do believe that, you know, things may not get any better at times before the Lord comes, but at the same time, you know, I think we should fight for it.
Maintaining Perspective and Allegiance to Jesus Christ Amidst Political Battles
I think we should do the right thing regardless. Then listen, whatever happens, in the midterms, Jesus is Lord, and I'm still going to be for Jesus. You know, that's, that's the thing we, we need to do. And we don't need to feel like, well, we lost that battle. We may have, you know, you may have lost an election, but you know what? You haven't lost your faith faith, and you haven't lost the, the commitment of God in your life and your commitment to God. I mean, so we need to keep our perspectives right as, as followers of Jesus. And, you know, and, and we got, we have to understand that why we may be vigilant to do the right thing, and we want to do the right thing politically in life. Listen, our allegiance is ultimately to Jesus and to his word, and that's what our allegiance needs to continue to be.
Pastor Jeff Schreve What would you say, Dr. Floyd, if you had a sit down with Donald Trump as far as, what he should do with Iran and other issues that are important to Christians?
Advice for Donald Trump on Leading with Godly Direction and Protecting Persecuted Christians
Dr. Floyd Wow. Well, I would tell him, listen, Mr. President, you know, you're going to have to understand that God wants to give you direction in these things, and you need the people around you to help you give direction. And you need to do the right thing, whatever the right thing is relating to a, country like Iran. But these countries as well, including Iran, you need to protect those who are being murdered and slaughtered for their faith because Christianity is being assaulted in various parts of the world. And we need to take action on those matters, and we do not need to ignore those matters.
Praying for President Trump and the Challenges of His Impossible Agenda
And I know, you know, the president has a heart for all of that. It's just, you know, he's, he's got an impossible agenda and an impossible task before him. And, you know, I would pray for him and pray that he, that he does it and pray that God gives him the right people around him to help him do what needs to be done.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Yes. you know, people like to take shots at Donald Trump.
Addressing Trump Derangement Syndrome and the Need for Presidential Solidarity
he probably the most maligned person I've ever seen in my lifetime. just day after day after day. And Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing where people just hate his guts. Now, you had mentioned, and this is big news with the Bush family, I don't know why they would want to vote for James Tallarico. That makes absolutely no sense. But some have said, well, they hate Trump so bad that they'll go to the other side. how do you see that?
Dr. Floyd Well, you know, I don't understand all the, all the, all the, the situations in all of that, you know, between the former presidents and all of those matters in relationship to the President, I, I, it breaks my heart to see that. I don't, I don't like that. I wish that they would, combine all that they have for the good of the nation.
The Heartbreak of Seeing Lack of Solidarity Among Former Presidents for the Good of the Nation
And to me, that's what presidents do. And for some reason, you know, there's been a lot of stuff between all of those guys, and I don't understand it. I, I really don't. And I'm, I pray for the president every day. I prayed for every one of those presidents through the years. And, I, and I love them, I support them, but, man, we're, America needs that solidarity of leadership before us. When is the last time have we seen those men united as one for the good of this country? And that breaks my heart. Yeah, you dial back even a decade or two, you would have seen that.
Pastor Jeff Schreve We have just about a minute or so to go.
A Prayer for America, a Call for a Spiritual Awakening, and Doing the Right Thing in the Election
Dr. Floyd, would you pray for us and pray for our country in this minute that we have left?
Dr. Floyd Sure. Father in heaven, we love you and we love our country. Our allegiance is to Jesus and his word above all else. So help us to be able to be a witness for the gospel today. We pray for our nation. We pray more than anything for the next great move of God. We pray for our nation, for the next great spiritual awakening in our nation. We need millions come to Christ.
We need.
Dr. Floyd We need a massive prayer movement that moves the heart of God and moves the people of God to doing everything we can, can to reach this country for Christ. But Lord, we, got to live in this thing. And we pray that you lead people to do the right thing in the coming election.
Pastor Jeff Schreve Yes.
Dr. Floyd And I pray for God's grace, God's favor, God's blessing, and God's mercy upon this country.

$28 sponsors one ultrasound and $140 helps to rescue five babies. Your generous tax deductible donation also helps to provide Women who choose life with assistance for up to two. To donate, dial £250 and say the keyword baby. That's £250, baby. Or visit preborn.com afr.
